Weekly Podcast Listening Jumps Nearly 17% in The Past Year

Podcast listening continued its methodical march north in 2020, with particular growth in younger demos and weekly listenership.

This, according to “The Infinite Dial” — the annual tracking of consumer audio consumption from Edison Research and Triton Digital.

The number of people in the U.S. who listen to a podcast at least once per week has crossed 80 million, a jump of nearly 17% from last year. Those who listen weekly listen a lot, consuming an average of eight episodes each week, selecting from an average of five different podcast shows. Edison believes part of the increase is due to listening to increasingly popular daily news podcasts.

Another headline is a significant jump in listening among 12-34 year-olds.

Monthly podcast listenership is up four percentage points, or nearly 11% – to 116 million people.
80 million people in the U.S. now listen to podcasts weekly, a rise of 16.6%.
Growth came from younger demos, with 56% of all 12-34 year olds listening to a podcast at least once per month.
Weekly podcast listeners really love the medium, averaging eight different episodes per week. On average, weekly listeners consume episodes from five different shows.
